Sometimes, the most difficult seasons of our lives Sometimes, the most difficult seasons of our lives are the ones we struggle to understand while living through them. We feel stuck. Overwhelmed. Exhausted. We question our decisions, our direction, and sometimes even ourselves. Yet somewhere beneath the uncertainty, a quiet voice reminds us to keep going. We’re still learning. Still growing. Still becoming. Through nearly three decades in holistic health, education, and personal development, alongside my own profound challenges, I’ve learned something important: Growth doesn’t always feel like growth when you’re in the middle of it. Sometimes it feels like uncertainty, starting over, or having absolutely no idea what comes next. And sometimes, the greatest challenge isn’t finding answers. It’s trusting yourself enough to move forward without them. As Founder of the International Parenting & Health Institute (IPHI), I’ve spent years educating professionals who support individuals and families navigating complex life experiences. One principle remains central to my work: understanding the whole person. Our emotions, physical well-being, relationships, environments, and life circumstances are deeply interconnected. Personal transformation rarely follows a straight line. I’ve experienced this firsthand. Building an international educational organization while navigating motherhood, financial uncertainty, and personal adversity has taught me that resilience isn’t about never struggling. It’s about finding ways to move through difficulties while remaining connected to yourself. And moving forward doesn’t always mean pushing harder. Sometimes it means resting, seeking support, reassessing your direction, or allowing yourself space to process. So if you’re navigating a difficult season in parenting, relationships, health, business, or personal growth, I hope this reaches you. You don’t need everything figured out today. You don’t need to turn every painful experience into a lesson before you’re ready. Sometimes, recognizing that you’re still here, still learning, and still finding your way is enough. ❤️ Mar De Carlo Founder, International Parenting & Health Institu
How much sunlight should I get? How much should I How much sunlight should I get? How much should I exercise? What should I eat? How much sleep do I need? Ask me questions like these and I probably won’t give you a definitive answer right away. I’ll start asking you questions. Because there is no single recommendation that automatically makes sense for every person, every family, or every situation. Your age, health history, environment, lifestyle, routines, stressors, relationships, responsibilities, goals, current challenges, and many other factors, can change the conversation. This is one of the foundations of a truly holistic approach. Too often, health and parenting questions are brought to social media, forums, or public groups with very little context. Someone asks a general question, and dozens of people offer answers based on what worked for them. But what worked for someone else may have very little to do with what is appropriate for you. Before jumping to solutions, we need to understand the person. We ask questions. We gather information. We look for patterns and contributing factors. We consider the whole picture. And only then can we begin exploring individualized strategies within our professional scope. Knowing yourself, and understanding the person in front of you, is where meaningful change begins. This is also a core philosophy behind the professional education we provide at the International Parenting & Health Institute. We train coaches, consultants, and educators to think beyond one-size-fits-all recommendations and develop the critical-thinking, investigative, and holistic coaching skills needed to support real people with real-life complexity. You can have all the knowledge in the world, but k You can have all the knowledge in the world, but knowledge alone doesn’t create change. We live in a time when information is everywhere. We can Google a question, listen to a podcast, watch a video, read a book, or ask AI and have information in seconds. But knowing and doing are two very different things. Real transformation happens when knowledge becomes PRACTICE. When we take what we’ve learned and apply it consistently, mindfully, and intentionally to our lives and the lives of the people we support. That philosophy is woven throughout our education at the International Parenting & Health Institute (IPHI). We don’t believe professional education should stop at theory. Our holistic certification programs are designed to help students understand the knowledge, explore the whole person, develop practical skills, and learn how to apply what they’re learning in real-world coaching and professional settings. Because becoming an effective coach, consultant, or educator isn’t about how much information you can memorize. It’s about what you can DO with what you know. ❤️ Interested in becoming a certified: ✨ Adult Sleep Coach ✨ Children & Teen Sleep Coach ✨ Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant ✨ Baby Planner ✨ Pre-Postnatal Nutrition Coach ✨ Eco-Consultant ✨ Breastfeeding Educator Explore our certification programs at parentinghealthinstitute.com. ☎️ Thank you for calling the Exhausted Mom Hotline ☎️ Thank you for calling the Exhausted Mom Hotline. If you’re calling to offer free babysitting, a paid vacation, eight uninterrupted hours of sleep, someone to make dinner, fold the laundry, or handle absolutely everything for the next 24 hours… Please stay on the line. Your call is VERY important to us. 😂 For all other inquiries, please leave a message after the beep. Actually, don’t. We’re tired. 😭😂 All jokes aside, motherhood can be beautiful, meaningful, hilarious and completely exhausting. Sometimes what an overwhelmed mom needs isn’t another reminder to “practice self-care.” She needs actual support, actual rest, and someone willing to take something off her plate. So if you know a tired mom, maybe don’t tell her to take a bubble bath. Bring dinner. Watch the kids. Fold something. Let her sleep. ❤️ And to every exhausted mom out there: this hotline sees you. 😂☎️
What if one of the hardest parts of parenting isn’ What if one of the hardest parts of parenting isn’t the struggle itself, but believing the struggle shouldn’t be happening? We’re surrounded by ideas about what parenting is supposed to look like. Patient. Peaceful. Connected. Consistent. And when real life doesn’t look that way, comparison can creep in: Why is this so hard? Why can’t I handle this better? Am I doing something wrong? But parenting is a human relationship, not a performance. There will be frustration. Sadness. Uncertainty. Disconnection. Repair. Joy. Growth. And plenty of moments we never could have planned for. What if, instead of immediately judging those moments, we became curious about them? What is happening with my child right now? What is happening within me? What does this moment actually need? Sometimes the answer may be connection. Sometimes a boundary. Sometimes space. Sometimes support. Sometimes simply acknowledging, This is hard right now. Our children don’t need an image of a perfect parent. They benefit from relationships where emotions can be acknowledged, mistakes can be repaired, needs can be communicated, and support can be sought when it’s needed. Maybe successful parenting isn’t about eliminating the struggle. Maybe it’s about learning to meet the child, the parent and the moment that are actually here, not the ones we were told “should” be here. ❤️ Save this for a difficult parenting day, or share it with a parent who needs the reminder. ~ Mar De Carlo 🌎 Founded in 2009 and represented across 72 countries, the International Parenting & Health Institute provides holistic professional education in pregnancy, parenting, sleep, nutrition and family support. Research has raised an interesting possibility. A Research has raised an interesting possibility. A study published in Science Advances found that participants’ sleep patterns fluctuated across the lunar cycle. In the days leading up to the full moon, people tended to fall asleep later and sleep for less time. The researchers observed the pattern across several communities, although research on lunar cycles and sleep overall remains mixed. But perhaps there’s a bigger conversation here. We are constantly interacting with our environment. Light. Stress. Relationships. Work. Technology. Food. Hormonal changes. Daily schedules. And potentially other environmental influences we don’t fully understand yet. But what is happening outside of you is only part of the picture. What are you putting in your body? What are you putting on your body? How are you nourishing yourself? How are you moving? How are you managing stress? How are you caring for your emotional well-being? And perhaps most importantly: What kind of relationship have you developed with yourself and your body? The deeper that connection becomes, the more you recognize your body’s signals, understand your individual needs, and consistently support your physical and emotional well-being, the stronger your internal foundation can become. That doesn’t mean you’ll never experience fluctuations. You will. Sleep changes. Energy changes. Hormones change. Life changes. But rather than trying to control every external influence, we can strengthen the foundation from which we respond to them. The goal isn’t to become unaffected by the world around us. It’s to become less easily thrown out of balance by it. That is one of the principles behind the holistic approach to sleep we teach at the International Parenting & Health Institute. If you’re a parent, caregiver, entrepreneur, helpi If you’re a parent, caregiver, entrepreneur, helping professional or simply someone carrying a lot, you’ve probably said this at least once. And I get it. When your day is already overflowing with responsibilities, the idea of adding one more thing called “self-care” can almost feel laughable. 😂 But here’s what I remind my clients: Self-care doesn’t always require more time. Sometimes it requires looking differently at the time you already have. It can be taking five quiet minutes before everyone wakes up. Stepping outside and feeling the sun on your face. Eating lunch without answering emails. Taking a few slow breaths before walking into the next meeting. Stretching while your coffee brews. Saying “no” to something that is draining you. Asking for help instead of automatically doing everything yourself. Going to bed instead of finishing one more thing. And sometimes, self-care is recognizing that you deserve to be included among the people you spend so much time caring for. ❤️ As holistic coaches, we also have an important role here. Instead of simply telling a client to “practice more self-care,” we can help them uncover what is actually getting in the way, identify what feels realistic for their life, and create specific, achievable action steps they can follow. That’s the difference between giving advice and truly coaching the whole person. If you’re a parent looking for holistic education or a professional who wants to learn how to support clients through a whole-person approach, visit parentinghealthinstitute.com to explore the International Parenting & Health Institute and our professional certification programs. Because self-care doesn’t have to be another item on your to-do list. Sometimes it starts with giving yourself permission to matter, too.
No filter. Just me at 51, standing in the Californ No filter. Just me at 51, standing in the California sunshine with freshly blown-out hair that had other plans. 😂 I’ll be 52 in late October. If there’s one thing the last year has taught me, it’s the value of being present. We tend to think about life in terms of age and how many years we have ahead of us. But none of us is guaranteed a certain amount of time. So I’ve been enjoying it. The big moments. The small ones. The unexpected and beautiful ones. Even those that didn’t turn out the way I planned. I’ve raised children. Built a business from the ground up. Taken risks, changed directions, started over, learned things the hard way, laughed until I cried, cried until I could laugh again, and become a very different woman from the one who began this journey. This year, the International Parenting & Health Institute entered its 18th year in business. 18 years. That feels surreal. So much of my life has been about building, teaching, parenting, creating and supporting others, while remembering to enjoy my own life along the way. And I’m not slowing down or making myself smaller. Quite the opposite. I want to expand everything I’ve created into something even greater. Dream bigger. Experience more. Create more. Discover what else is possible. More travel. More beauty. More laughter. More real conversations about aging, motherhood, business, relationships, reinvention, wellness and whatever else life brings. And maybe a few more hair blowouts. 😂 As I approach 52, one of the greatest gifts has been becoming more myself, more transparent, more present and more comfortable evolving. Maybe that’s one of the beautiful things about getting older. You surrender the need to live according to other people’s opinions or have everything figured out. You surrender more deeply to the present moment. And eventually, to yourself. Not the woman you thought you were supposed to become. The woman you actually became. And I really adore her. Her successes. Her failures. Her strength. Her softness. Her mistakes. Her growth. Her perfectly imperfect way of figuring life out as she goes. All of it. Because every version of her brought me
Parent guilt is one of the most common emotional e Parent guilt is one of the most common emotional experiences in parenting, especially during moments of stress, exhaustion, rushing, sensory overload, bedtime struggles, and emotional overwhelm. The goal isn’t to eliminate guilt. It’s to understand it, process it, and prevent it from becoming shame. Guilt can say: “I wish I had handled that differently.” Shame says: “I’m a bad parent.” That distinction matters. Guilt can become an opportunity for awareness, accountability, repair, and growth. Shame attacks identity and can keep us stuck. The body matters. When we’re overwhelmed, stress isn’t experienced only through our thoughts. Our breathing can change. Muscles tense. Our capacity for patience and reflection can narrow. Somatic practices such as intentional breathing, releasing physical tension, stretching, shaking, mindful movement, or walking can help us slow down and reconnect with our bodies before responding. The mind matters too. Instead of: “I failed.” “I’m a terrible parent.” “I should have done better.” Try asking: “What overwhelmed me?” “What was happening in my body?” “What did I need in that moment?” “What might my child have needed?” “How can I reconnect and repair?” This is where guilt can become information rather than punishment. And repair matters. Children do not need perfect parents. They need relationships where mistakes can be acknowledged, emotions can be held safely, accountability exists, and connection can be restored. Every sincere repair can teach a child: Relationships can experience rupture and still heal. Accountability and love can coexist. Difficult emotions do not have to threaten connection. We can make mistakes and choose what we do next. Save this as a reminder for the hard parenting moments: bedtime struggles, big emotions, sensory overload, exhaustion, triggers, or the days when you simply wish you had responded differently. Parenting isn’t about getting every moment right. It’s about building the awareness and capacity to reflect, reconnect, repair, and grow.
Parenting Relief is coming back, with a new chapte Parenting Relief is coming back, with a new chapter. After taking a summer break, I’m excited to return with not only my solo episodes, where I’ll continue sharing my own expertise and perspective, but also meaningful conversations with experts whose work can help us understand ourselves, our children, and our relationships more deeply. I want to explore parenting from the whole picture, not simply what children do, but what may be happening underneath the behavior. I also want to create space for conversations about us: our nervous systems, our own childhood experiences, the relationships that shaped us, and how those experiences can influence the way we parent and connect today. And I want you to help shape where we go next. Look at the four topics in the poll and tell me which one you most want to explore first. Comment 1, 2, 3, or 4 below. And if there’s a topic, or an expert, you’d love to see featured on Parenting Relief, tell me that too. I’m excited to build this next chapter with you. ~Mar
1. You say you want better sleep…but you’re scroll 1. You say you want better sleep…but you’re scrolling until midnight, keeping your brain stimulated when it needs cues that the day is ending. 2. You’re exhausted…but you rarely actually rest. You collapse. There’s a difference. 3. You think sleep is something you “do” at night…but healthy sleep is supported throughout the entire day: through light exposure, movement, nutrition, stress regulation, emotional well-being, routines, environment, and boundaries. 4. You blame your hormones, age, or stress…but may never examine the daily habits, coping patterns, environmental factors, or emotional load that could also be affecting your sleep. 5. You expect your body to switch off at night…even though you’ve asked it to stay alert, productive, stimulated, and available all day. 6. You want deep rest…but you haven’t created the conditions that support it. A nervous system that remains on high alert can make settling into restorative sleep much harder. 7. You think insomnia is the whole problem…but persistent sleep difficulties can have multiple contributing factors: biological, psychological, behavioral, emotional, environmental, circadian, and medical. Looking beyond the nighttime symptom matters. 8. You say you’re tired…but sometimes “tired” is also wired, overwhelmed, overstimulated, emotionally depleted, under-rested, and disconnected from what your body has been asking for all day. Here’s the bigger truth: Sleep doesn’t begin when your head hits the pillow. Your nights are influenced by what happens across your entire 24-hour day. That’s why truly integrative sleep support looks beyond bedtime. It asks deeper questions about the whole person, the whole environment, and the interconnected factors influencing sleep. Better sleep isn’t always about trying harder to sleep. Sometimes it’s about changing the conditions that make sleep possible. Save this for the nights when you’re tempted to focus only on bedtime, and share it with someone who needs a more holistic perspective on sleep. Being well-rested isn’t a luxury. It’s your greate Being well-rested isn’t a luxury. It’s your greatest performance advantage. When we think about success, we often focus on productivity, discipline, and working harder. But we rarely ask a much more important question: Are you well-rested enough to perform at your best? Sleep isn’t just about avoiding fatigue. It influences: ✨ Mental clarity ✨ Decision-making ✨ Memory and learning ✨ Emotional regulation ✨ Creativity ✨ Focus ✨ Communication ✨ Physical health ✨ Long-term resilience When you’re exhausted, even simple decisions require more effort. Your patience becomes thinner. Your focus declines. Mistakes become more common. You may even begin to normalize functioning in a constant state of fatigue without realizing how much it’s costing you. This is one of the reasons so many healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, health coaches, and wellness practitioners, are expanding their knowledge of sleep. They’re recognizing that sleep isn’t a single nighttime event. It’s a 24-hour lifestyle. How you manage stress. How you nourish your body. Your exposure to light. Your movement. Your relationships. Your nervous system. Your daily routines. All of these influence the quality of your sleep and your sleep, in turn, influences nearly every aspect of your health and performance. At the International Parenting & Health Institute, we believe that understanding sleep means understanding the whole person. Because when you improve sleep, you don’t just improve nights. You improve lives. What changed for you when you finally became consistently well-rested? 🕊️

When you are at peace, you are in a position of po When you are at peace, you are in a position of power. Every time you allow someone’s words, behavior, opinions, or projections to consume your attention, you give them access to your energy. You may not be responsible for what another person chooses to say or put into the world, but you are responsible for what you continue to carry, replay, and empower. Protecting your peace does not mean pretending that something did not hurt. It means recognizing what happened without allowing it to take over your nervous system, your thoughts, or your life force. Not every insult requires a response. Not every accusation requires a defense. Not every misunderstanding requires an explanation. Sometimes, the most powerful response is to remain grounded, withdraw your energy, and refuse to let another person determine your inner state. Your attention is valuable. Your energy is sacred. Be intentional about where you place it. ❤️ “The highest spiritual practice is to bear insult without returning it.” ~Swami Sivananda Saraswati Video featuring Luis Mojica Credit: @holistic.life.navigation
Why is change so hard, even when we genuinely want Why is change so hard, even when we genuinely want it? Sometimes it isn’t the change itself that weighs us down. It’s the resistance we feel when life doesn’t unfold the way we planned. You intended to wake up early, but the alarm didn’t go off. You planned to make a nourishing breakfast, but the morning became chaotic. You promised yourself you would exercise, complete that project, remain patient with your children, or finally begin creating a healthier routine and then life interrupted the plan. And instead of simply adjusting, many of us turn against ourselves: “I already messed up.” “I can never stay consistent.” “There goes my whole day.” “Why can’t I get it together?” Now the original interruption is no longer the only challenge. Our energy is also being consumed by frustration, guilt, self-judgment, and resistance to what already happened. But beating yourself up does not restore the morning, change the circumstance, or move you closer to what you wanted. It only directs more of your energy toward the problem. Welcoming what happened may seem counterintuitive, but welcoming it does not mean you liked it, wanted it, or are giving up. It means acknowledging: This is what happened. Now, what is still possible from here? Maybe breakfast wasn’t what you planned, but your next meal can still nourish you. Maybe you woke up late, but you can still take one meaningful step. Maybe the morning was difficult, but it does not have to determine the rest of your day. Change is like a weight. You can lift it and allow it to strengthen you or you can let it sit on top of you and weigh you down. You may not control every interruption, delay, disappointment, or change of direction. But you can decide what you build with it. ❤️ The plan may have changed. That doesn’t mean your progress has to stop.
What you consistently focus on, you strengthen. W What you consistently focus on, you strengthen. When we repeatedly focus on what is wrong, what is missing, or what is not working, the problem can begin to occupy more and more of our mental and emotional energy. This does not mean ignoring challenges, denying difficult emotions, or pretending everything is fine. It means learning to identify the problem without continually empowering it. The same applies when you are experiencing a sleep challenge. Acknowledge what is happening. Explore the possible contributing factors. Ask the necessary questions. Then begin directing your attention toward the support, habits, resources, and solutions that can help you move forward. Instead of repeatedly thinking: “I can’t sleep.” “My sleep is terrible.” “Nothing is working.” Begin asking: “What is my body communicating?” “What may be contributing to this?” “What is one supportive step I can take today?” “What is already beginning to improve?” Identify the issue, but do not make it your identity. Your attention is valuable. Place more of it on what you want to understand, strengthen, create, and experience. What we consistently nurture is often what begins to grow. ❤️
Knowledge and credentials matter, but so does the Knowledge and credentials matter, but so does the way a professional uses them. This excerpt comes from my presentation, The Holistic Science of Sleep Method™: The Ultimate Way to Address and Solve Adult and Child Sleep Challenges, where I discuss what to consider when seeking support from a doctor, therapist, sleep consultant, or coach. When working with any professional, we can respect their education and expertise without minimizing our own lived experience, observations, values, or inner guidance. The most effective professionals do not position themselves as unquestionable authorities. They do not use fear, pressure, shame, rigid restrictions, or persuasion to gain compliance. Instead, they create space for: ✨ Respectful collaboration ✨ Thoughtful questions ✨ Informed decision-making ✨ Honest communication ✨ Client autonomy ✨ Humility and continued learning A truly holistic professional understands that the client is not beneath them. The client is an active participant in the process. Leadership is not about controlling another person’s choices. It is about offering knowledge, guidance, courage, presence, and integrity, while respecting each person’s right to make decisions for themselves and their family. Because a true leader can often accomplish far more through trust and influence than someone relying solely on authority. At the International Parenting & Health Institute, we teach our students that meaningful support requires more than knowledge alone. It requires the ability to listen, collaborate, remain within scope, acknowledge one’s humanity, and continually make room for growth. When a child’s sleep challenge may be connected to When a child’s sleep challenge may be connected to emotional distress, asking the right questions is not overstepping, it is responsible practice. 🎥 This excerpt was taken from Component Two of our live mentoring within the Holistic Pregnancy & Child Sleep Consultant Certification Program. During this discussion, one participant raised an important concern: Is it appropriate or even within a sleep consultant’s scope to ask a family questions when emotional abuse is suspected? It is a valid question, especially for professionals who are committed to respecting boundaries and remaining firmly within their scope of practice. But asking compassionate, sleep-relevant and safety-oriented questions is not the same as diagnosing, investigating, labeling or treating emotional abuse. Our role is not to determine whether abuse has legally or clinically occurred. Our role is to gather enough appropriate information to understand: • Whether the emotional environment may be affecting the child’s sleep and nervous system • Whether the situation can be supported safely within our professional role • Whether the case requires collaboration or referral to a qualified mental health, medical, safeguarding or legal professional • Whether there are immediate concerns that require us to follow applicable reporting laws and professional protocols Sleep does not exist in isolation. Stress, fear, conflict, emotional insecurity and family dynamics can all influence a child’s ability to settle, regulate and sleep deeply. Ignoring those realities simply because they are uncomfortable does not protect our scope. It may prevent us from recognizing when a family needs a different level of support. The distinction lies in how we ask, why we ask and what we do with the information. A skilled holistic sleep consultant knows how to remain curious without interrogating, compassionate without assuming, and observant without diagnosing. This is the depth of training our students receive.
How can you tell whether you are working with a se How can you tell whether you are working with a seasoned child sleep consultant or adult sleep coach? Pay attention to the questions they ask. A comprehensive intake form is an essential starting point. It helps gather important information about sleep patterns, routines, health history, lifestyle, environment, stressors, and current concerns. But experienced sleep professionals do not stop with a standard list of questions. They listen closely. They notice what has not yet been explored. They ask thoughtful, individualized follow-up questions based on the client’s unique circumstances, experiences, and responses. Because two clients may describe the same sleep challenge while experiencing it for entirely different reasons. Customized questions can help uncover important contributing factors that may not appear on a standard intake form, including: ✨ Physical and emotional well-being ✨ Nutrition and hydration ✨ Stress and nervous system regulation ✨ Family or relationship dynamics ✨ Environmental influences ✨ Daily rhythms and lifestyle patterns ✨ Medical concerns that may require referral ✨ Previous strategies and how the client responded This is one of the clearest distinctions between simply completing an intake process and conducting a truly holistic investigation. A seasoned child sleep consultant or adult sleep coach does not force every client into the same framework. They remain curious, listen without assumptions, and allow the client’s story to guide the conversation. At the International Parenting & Health Institute, we teach our students to look beyond surface-level symptoms, ask meaningful questions, remain within their professional scope, and support the whole person, not simply the sleep challenge. When a family is struggling with child sleep, the When a family is struggling with child sleep, the focus often goes immediately to the child: What schedule should we change? How do we stop the waking? How do we get the child to fall asleep independently? But within the Holistic Science of Sleep Method™, we begin somewhere many approaches overlook: the physical and emotional state of the parent. Sleep deprivation can leave parents overwhelmed, dysregulated, and desperate for immediate relief. When someone feels they cannot take another difficult night, decisions may be driven by exhaustion rather than by what feels aligned with their child’s needs or natural development. That is why we evaluate the whole family system, not just the child’s sleep behavior. We explore the parent’s: ✨ Physical and emotional well-being ✨ Stress load and nervous-system regulation ✨ Support system and available resources ✨ Beliefs, expectations, fears, and pressures surrounding sleep ✨ Capacity to remain present during challenging moments We then provide practical tools that help parents regulate themselves, access meaningful support, and respond to their child from a more grounded place. Because supporting a child’s sleep is not only about what happens at bedtime. It is also about helping parents feel supported enough to offer connection, consistency, and co-regulation as their child moves through their natural sleep development. Our goal is not to force sleep or rush a child into forced sleep independence. It is to understand what may be contributing to the challenge and support sleep in a way that respects the child’s development, individual needs, relationships, environment, and family circumstances. When IPHI launched this pioneering program in 2011, support for the parent was established as a primary part of the process.
